X Ray School
Our society is currently living with a rather difficult job market. Unemployment statistics are on the rise and people are finding themselves laid off or downsized. Further still, some are considering returning to school to either complete or pursue their education. Sometimes, retraining for a completely new career seems like the best option. Some careers appear to offer a bright future in spite of the current economic climate. For instance, there will always be a demand for health care so jobs in this field remain available. While many people will not be in a position to embark on a full medical career as a doctor or nurse, consideration should be given to a position such as an xray technician.
If you have ever sustained an injury, like a broken bone, or sought diagnosis for a possible disease, you have met with an xray technician. These individuals are trained to operate all manner of xray equipment and to produce the best possible xrays. They have an excellent understanding of the human body and it is their responsibility to position a patient correctly so that the resulting xray will be of the most value to the diagnostic process.
Before considering a career as an xray technician, a person should do a bit of self-evaluation. This job will entail manipulating the bodies of patients who may be in a great deal of pain. Due to fear of the unknown or fear of serious illness, xray patients may also be belligerent. The xray tech must have the ability to remain calm and empathetic while maintaining the skills and professionalism to use their technology efficiently and correctly.
Education options for xray technicians vary. Some will obtain an Associates Degree while others will pursue a Bachelors Degree. However, for this career, one is not bound by attending a standard university. Xray technicians can attend trade school or may also be trained through hospitals or the military. The student may also choose to attend an online xray technician school. An xray technician’s education can take one, two or four years, depending on their job goals. Some train beyond xrays in order to be able to perform ultrasounds, mammograms, MRIs, CT scans and more. These education paths will prepare students for state tech certification exams.
In this field, there is also the option to train as a noncertified technician. For example, the Radiology program at PrimaMed Training Institute in Texas offers four and eight week programs that exceed the state’s minimum requirements. Programs can be completed for $1,250. To apply, potential students must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or GED.
If you possess strong attention to detail, a facility with computers and technology and are in good physical condition that will allow you to be on your feet for extended periods of time and to lift and manipulate patients, a career as an xray technician may be within your grasp. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists estimates that the current average xray technician salary is approximately $59,000 per year. This clearly demonstrates that an investment in the right education can yield a strong return.
